When SlipKnot appeared with their debut eponymous album in 1999, music snobs dismissed them as a clever marketing scheme. But those nine nameless musicians wearing spooky masks could play indeed. Guitarists Mick Thompson and Jim Root are both scary shredders and airtight rhythm players, and their extreme take on heavy metal still cuts like a razor after having been copied by many other bands.
