In 1994, nobody expected the future of music to come from the British town of Bristol, courtesy of a trio of genius tinkerers messing with alternative rock and trip hop. Dummy, the debut album by Portishead, was an instant international hit, hot on the heels of their monster single Glory Box. Guitarist Adrian Utley remains a perfect example of how to complement a singer’s voice with grungy noisy licks while remaining in service of the song.
